DEVELOPING THE “JLJ” MONOGRAM
In 2015 I began sketching my initials — JLJ — in various monogram styles as a simple branding exercise. The goal of this self-initiated project was to create a personal logo that I could add to reels, portfolios, business cards, stationary headers, etc. I settled on a version in a lowercase cursive style as it allowed all three letters to flow neatly between each other and I could easily imagine the animation made possible by this configuration.

The first freehand drawing; the vector version re-drawn with guides.

I used the above animation as an intro to my demo reel for a few years, retiring it in 2020. Creating this piece was an opportunity to entertain my wildest predilections, design-wise, so I did: classical patterns; luxurious textures; frames within frames (within frames); an overwhelming number of moving parts coming together in a pleasing, maximalist way. Below is a much earlier version of the same concept. Both pieces use an audio mnemonic created for me by the musician Michael Silver.

I used the JLJ monogram on the first business card I designed for myself.

Further explorations, ultimately never used: thick and fun; thin and refined.
